Edition Records is proud to announce the signing of the extraordinary young jazz talent, Sultan Stevenson, for his highly anticipated album “El Roi,” scheduled for release in March 2025.
Pianist, bandleader and composer Sultan Stevenson has been making waves in the jazz community with his compelling sound and profound storytelling ability. His music effortlessly bridges the gap between the traditional and the contemporary, infusing classic jazz elements with a fresh, modern perspective. Stevenson’s unique style, influenced by legends such as McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock, and Kenny Kirkland, is both captivating and accessible, drawing listeners into a rich, immersive musical journey.
Dave Stapleton, founder of Edition Records, expressed his excitement about the new signing: “Sultan is a natural communicator and storyteller. His music has a captivating throughline that is both accessible and deeply thought-provoking. We are thrilled to welcome him to Edition.”
Sultan Stevenson replies “I’m delighted to be joining the Edition family. I’ve been watching in admiration of what they’ve been doing for jazz in where I’m from, London, and far beyond. The spirit of my forthcoming album is written in identity and faith. The record attempts to be artistically distinct. I feel as though Edition appreciates and recognises these themes very intimately. I’m both grateful and excited to be working with them.”
Sultan speaks about the inspiration behind El Roi: “This album is my way of expressing thoughts and emotions that I have about two very important concepts: Faith and identity. The word ‘El Roi’ is one of the many names for God in the bible. It means ‘God of Sight’ The title binds together these two themes well. ‘God’ referring to faith and ‘sight’ referring to how one is seen and perceives the world around you.”
