ALBUM of the Week | Kneebody Chapters
Each week the team at Edition selects one album from our catalogue to highlight as Album of the Week.
Kneebody | Chapters (2019)
Chosen by: Olivia Williams, Product Manager
“a perfect cocktail of jazz, pop, rock and electro influences.”
Product Manager Olivia explains why she has chosen Chapters as her album of the week:
When the album was released in 2019, Trumpeter Shane Endsley talked about how “The title ‘Chapters’ references the episodic nature of life and the way our personal stories begin to form a narrative as we accumulate more time on the planet…We have our personal chapters and we have our chapters as a band and they all intertwine. Sometimes we have to look back to realize what a given chapter was about and sometimes it can be noted in the present.”
The world and Edition Records has changed a lot in the two years since Chapters was released. This album is a perfect metaphor for that change, and has taken on an all new significance because of it.
Kneebody are one of the most adventurous and exciting bands of their generation for their sheer virtuosity, musicianship and inventiveness. Chapters, their 9th studio album, is highly original, explosive and inventive. A powerhouse of firepower told with commanding musical intent.
The album is Kneebody’s first since they became a four piece with the extraordinary Nate Wood, who takes the dual role of drummer and bassist on three tracks (and bringing in the astonishing Kaveh Rastegar for the rest of the album). The release also features a stellar array of guests including Michael Mayo, Gretchen Parlato, Josh Dion and Becca Stevens – held together with their trademark sound of displaced beats, infectious riffs and haunting unison horns, ‘Chapters’ is one of their most spirited and accomplished albums to date.
