Phronesis was a powerhouse trio known for electrifying interplay, unmatched dynamism, and a fearless approach to contemporary jazz.

The Behemoth marked a new chapter for Phronesis, bringing their distinctive compositions to life on an large ensemble scale. This ambitious album reimagined ten pieces from their back catalogue, each arranged by Julian Argüelles and performed with the Frankfurt Radio Big Band. The result was a vivid tapestry of sound that retained the trio’s energy while enhancing it with rich, layered textures. Argüelles’ arrangements drew out new dimensions in Phronesis’ music, infusing each track with vibrant colour and spirit and capturing the ensemble’s renowned dynamism in a broader sonic landscape.

As arranger and conductor, Argüelles brought a deft touch, even stepping in as a soloist on Eger’s Urban Control, adding an extra spark to the track. The Frankfurt Radio Big Band complemented Phronesis’ intricate compositions with finesse, tackling the trio’s challenging material with confidence and creative flair under Argüelles’ direction. This collaboration highlighted the depth and flexibility of Phronesis’ work, resulting in an album that was both expansive and deeply rooted in their unique sound.
