Edition Records is thrilled to announce the signing and release of ‘Fiend’, the first live album from the acclaimed trio Enemy, marking their fourth release and a powerful new chapter for the band.

Featuring pianist Kit Downes, bassist Petter Eldh, and drummer James Maddren, ‘Fiend’ captures a decade of fearless musical exploration and deep artistic connection, recorded live over a two-day residency at the Bird’s Eye in Basel. This album, also a reunion with Edition following subsequent celebrated releases for We Jazz and ECM, serves as both a retrospective and a forward-looking statement, blending pieces from each previous album with fresh material that showcases the trio’s evolved sound—balancing intensity with a refined, striking subtlety.

As they celebrate a decade of collaboration, the band shares their thoughts for the new album, “It’s our tenth year of playing together, so it feels like a good time to make a live record – one that has all the freedom and risk taking we enjoy on stage. This music is constantly redefining itself and has morphed a lot in the last decade. We’re playing tunes from all 3 of our albums, all pretty different, and linking all the pieces through improvisation – with some other things in there also. New tunes or old tunes, it’s about moving forward together in the moment”.

Known for their masterful use of polyrhythms and inventive structures, Enemy’s live performance on Fiend pushes their collective improvisation to exhilarating heights. The trio’s approach, which includes performing without a set list, sees them transitioning freely between themes and compositions, creating a seamless flow that keeps listeners captivated. Signature tracks like “Faster than Light” reflect an evolving interplay, where bursts of colour and lightness contrast with moments of intensity, evoking the spirit of 90s studio jazz with layered, sophisticated compositions that redefine the traditional piano trio.

Kit Downes, whose growing profile has only added to the trio’s dynamic, brings an expanded lyricism to Enemy’s sound, while Eldh and Maddren, both longstanding contributors to Edition through recordings like Eldh’s Project Drums and Maddren’s regular sideman collaborations, add layers of innovation and depth to this release. Together, they form an electrifying ensemble whose conversation is intricate and instinctive, marking Enemy’s most potent expression to date—a celebration of their shared journey and a glimpse into the trio’s next chapter.

Fiend will be released on 11th April 2025
