Mark Guiliana Signs to Edition Records

Fans of Family First and Jersey will be rewarded this Fall with the eagerly awaited new album from Mark Guiliana, featuring Shai Maestro, Chris Morrissey and Jason Rigby, scheduled for release on Edition Records in October 2022.

Mark Guiliana is a superstar of his generation – a drummer, composer and producer with a formidable reputation for his adventurous and virtuosic technique, almost inhuman sense of timing and adaptability to a staggering range of styles. But it is his astute ability to intuitively understand the deep connection between his  music and his audiences, knowing when and when not to play, that gives the listener the most reward. He’s simply one of the most innovative and impressive drummers of today.

Over the course of Mark’s career he’s built a vast cult-like following for his own projects as well as with key collaborators including Brad Mehldau, Gretchen Parlato, Meshell Ndegeocello, the late great David Bowie, and more recently St. Vincent.

The new album comes five years since Mark’s last Jazz Quartet release – he feels the timing is just right, as he explains: After not playing together for a couple years, reuniting with Chris, Jason and Shai was truly euphoric. We headed into the studio to document all this new music after a blissful week of shows at the Village Vanguard in NYC. I’m very proud of the results and I can’t think of a better home for this album than Edition.”

For Edition, the CEO and founder Dave Stapleton, describes the signing as part of a personal and long term ambition to work with Mark; “Since I first heard Mark play back in 2006 at the Bath International Jazz Festival with Avishai Cohen, I have been in awe of Mark’s playing. I was mesmerised by his intuitive ability to play with such freedom and yet with a sense of timing that I wasn’t hearing anywhere else. He had this ability to switch into another gear that exceeded any expectation with something always new to say. In 2010, we had an opportunity to work with Mark on Phronesis’ Alive album but it was his work with Brad Mehldau that, for me, took it to the next level. By this time Edition was about six years old and in some way internally, set a long term ambition in my subconscious to work with him more closely on his own projects. Mark is an intuitive, compelling and modern Artist who likes to surround himself with the best, most creative musicians. He will be a name that will continue to be relevant and go down as one of the greats of the music”.
