Jasper Høiby, one of Europe’s most inventive and emotionally resonant bassists, returns with We Must Fight, the latest release from his collaborative ensemble Fellow Creatures. Due for release in July on Edition Records, We Must Fight reimagines material from his acclaimed work with Phronesis – the trailblazing piano trio that redefined the possibilities of the trio format – that transforms it into something more expansive, layered, and unmistakably current. With new arrangements by saxophonist Alex Hitchcock, the music moves from the focused intensity of a piano trio to the expressive depth of a full ensemble, where musicians connect in deeply engaging ways.
We Must Fight draws on 15 years of music, reshaped through a lens of shared connection and a desire to speak out in an increasingly tense and divided world. These pieces hold deep personal meaning for Høiby, now revitalised through the collective energy of a larger ensemble, where every musician shapes the direction and emotional depth of the music. The result is bold and immediate, richly textured yet rooted in clarity and purpose. Revisiting and reimagining this material over a decade later brings new relevance and perspective, as Høiby explains.
“Fellow Creatures was born out of a desire to collaborate more widely with a variety of musicians I admire and feel a connection to. Hearing these compositions through the voices of these musicians, people who mean something to me as musicians and humans, is exciting and meaningful. Coming together, musically and socially, especially in a time that feels increasingly fragmented is important and playing this material is a way of reimagining the past to speak to the present, and creating space for shared expression, honesty, and resistance through sound” Jasper Høiby
This album marks the next step in Høiby’s creative path, shaped by instinct, curiosity, and a belief in music’s power to connect and inspire. In a time of overload and noise, We Must Fight speaks with clarity and conviction, offering a sound built on listening, trust, and mutual expression.
“Jasper has always followed his instincts, constantly evolving and pushing himself into new territory. From the first time we worked together on Phronesis, Alive in 2010, it’s been fascinating to watch how his music grows. It’s incredibly exciting to hear this music reimagined with such openness and energy” Dave Stapleton, Edition Records
We Must Fight will be released on 18 July 2025
