Happy Birthday @davehollandjazz “For the last five years, I’ve been trying to persuade Dave Holland to release a box set celebrating his music, musicianship and humanity as a collaborator and bandleader. It’s something he’s never done before, despite releasing more than 50 albums in a career spanning over six decades. To mark his 80th birthday with one makes it that much sweeter. To me, he exemplifies everything that’s right about this music and art form: his humility, humanity, care and passion for the music, and the time and dedication he gives to doing what he believes is right. He’ll never cut corners in pursuit of a greater reward. He’s kind and respectful, yet clear about what he wants. His career is steeped in cultural history. From Miles Davis’s call in the late 1960s inviting him to America, to working with Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea and Michael Brecker, to name a few, it’s an extraordinary journey. I’ve had the privilege of hearing him share stories over countless coffees, phone calls and Zoom meetings. My introduction to Dave’s music came in the early 2000s through his quintet album Extended Play: Live at Birdland. I had no idea at the time that I would one day work with both Dave and Chris Potter, one of his long-standing collaborators. Today we celebrate his 80th birthday, and tomorrow we release Freedom Call, the milestone triple album box set featuring music from his Sextet, Quintet and Prism ensembles. Dave, I salute you. Happy birthday.”Dave Stapleton, founder of Edition Records
