Sebastian Rochford is a singular force in British music, an extraordinary drummer, composer, and producer. His work with the iconic group Polar Bear helped redefine the boundaries of jazz and earned multiple Mercury Prize nominations. With a career spanning collaborations with Patti Smith, Damon Albarn, Brian Eno, Adele and Grace Jones, and his 2023 ECM duo album A Short Diary with Kit Downes, an album written for his father described as a “ quiet masterpiece” , Rochford has carved out a unique space in contemporary music.

Finding Ways, released in November, is the debut album from Seb’s new project of the same name.

Built around the guitar, the record brings together a distinctive group of players including Tara Cunningham, David Preston, Adrian Utley, and Simon Tong. The music explores shifting combinations of up to three guitars at once, using layering and interaction as a central compositional tool rather than ornament.

The result is a vivid mix of jagged, experimental grooves and raw emotional weight. The sound stays direct and unvarnished – largely pedal-free – giving the music a timeless, exploratory quality. As with Rochford’s wider work, the album resists easy categorisation. It feels alive, fractured, and deeply human, shaped further by a mix from Tchad Blake.

The title Finding Ways reflects a mindset Rochford adopted during a period when several major life events arrived in quick succession. As he puts it: “It’s about finding ways to keep ourselves moving forward and buoyant, transforming life’s challenges into something meaningful, in a practical, everyday sense.”
