What’s new to Edition

In the first part of 2024  Edition Records is set to release a diverse array of albums, each showcasing unique musical talent. Joe Webb introduces ‘Collblanc,’ an EP blending piano mastery with 90s guitar influences and a love for football. The Grammy-nominated duo Gretchen Parlato and Lionel Loueke return with bonus tracks for their album ‘Lean In,’ a breezy yet emotionally profound work. Norwegian composer Daniel Herskedal is ready to unveil ‘A Single Sunbeam’, a mix of classical, improvised, and cinematic elements on our E2 Music imprint. 

Chris Potter’s ‘Eagle’s Point’ features jazz legends Brad Mehldau, John Patitucci, and Brian Blade in a modern jazz supergroup. Mark Lockheart brings ‘Smiling,’ a British jazz rock project fusing flute, sax, and electric guitar over rock rhythms. Oddarrang celebrates its 20th anniversary with the self-titled ‘Oddarrang,’ blending electronic, drums, guitar, cello, and trombone. Finally, Fergus McCreadie’s ‘Stream’ continues his exploration of natural themes, combining Scottish folklore with contemporary jazz whilst Jasper Høiby releases his second 3Elements Trio albums with his usual compelling, uncompromising, and robust sonic landscape.

Joe Webb – Collblanc (Edition)

Fuelled by deep love of 90’s guitar bands and an unwavering passion for football (with a slight obsession for Lionel Messi), Joe Webb emerges with a new EP ‘Collblanc’, featuring Will Sach (bass) and Sam Jesson (drums), as an extraordinary talent, virtuosically blending traditional piano mastery with a captivating uncompromising charisma.

Gretchen / Lionel – Lean In Bonus Tracks (Edition)

After receiving a Grammy nomination for their celebrated album ‘Lean In,’ Gretchen Parlato and Lionel Loueke are back with two bonus tracks from the same recording sessions. Praised by Presto Music for being “an album of camaraderie, effortlessly breezy yet imbued with genuine emotional sincerity and depth,” ‘Lean In’ emerged as a standout release of 2023.

Daniel Herskedal – A Single Sunbeam (E2 Music)

Since 2015, Norwegian composer Daniel Herskedal has been a dynamic force in music, releasing a series of highly acclaimed albums with Edition. On March 1st, he is poised to unveil ‘A Single Sunbeam’, a sublime fusion of classical, improvised, and cinematic styles, marking his most ambient work yet. Comparable to the likes of Nils Frahm, Max Richter, and Olafur Arnalds, but calling on the wild nature of his native Norway and the traditional joik styles of the Sami people, Herskedal navigates this musical terrain using the deep resonances of the tuba and bass trumpet.

Chris Potter – Eagle’s Point

Chris Potter spearheads the much anticipated eight-track album ‘Eagle’s Point’, featuring jazz maestros Brad Mehldau, John Patitucci, and Brian Blade, and showcasing unmatched expertise. A contemporary supergroup tour de force, ‘Eagle’s Point,’ released by Edition Records, is a vibrant celebration of modern jazz. This album demonstrates the collective genius of four of the genre’s most distinguished artists. Chris Potter reflects on the joy of this collaboration: “Working with Brad, John, and Brian, who have been among my favourite musicians since our initial collaborations in the early nineties, was exhilarating. This project was not just fun to create but also deeply inspiring, given the profound artistry and emotional depth they infuse into every note.”

Mark Lockheart – Smiling

In the footsteps of such British jazz rock pioneers as Nucleus, Mike Gibbs, Isotope and Colosseum Mark Lockheart’s new project fuses flute (the great Rowland Sutherland) with twin sax improvisations (Empirical’s Nathaniel Facey) with electric guitar (John Parricelli) and a full brass and wind section of top players over rock steady rhythms (Tom Herbert and ex Robert Plant drummer Dave Smith. Lockheart, in the vanguard of British jazz for four decades, returns with a triumph of sonic optimism on his latest album, blending edginess and rawness into the sophisticated tapestry of his sound. A masterful antidote to the chaos of modern life, ‘Smiling’ weaves a narrative capturing the essence of British jazz but infusinges it with the electric energy of rock, creating a charismatic and exuberant soundscape.

Oddarrang – Oddarrang

Oddarrang, the post-rock, minimalist quintet originating from Helsinki’s dynamic music scene, proudly presents their latest and culminating work, the self-titled album ‘Oddarrang.’ Commemorating 20 years since their inception, this ensemble weaves a distinctive auditory canvas, melding elements of electronic music with drums, guitar, cello, and trombone. This fusion epitomises their unique style, ingeniously encapsulated in the concept of an ‘Odd Arrangement,’ reflecting both their name and their innovative approach to music.

Fergus McCreadie – Stream

In the dynamic landscape of contemporary jazz, Scottish pianist and composer Fergus McCreadie has carved a remarkable niche. Since 2021 his career has skyrocketed marked by two acclaimed album releases that propelled him into the international limelight: shortlisted for the Mercury Prize and clinching Scottish Album of the Year for “Forest Floor.” His debut with Edition Records, “Cairn” (2021), set the stage for a journey deeply rooted in natural themes. McCreadie’s latest venture, “Stream,” continues this intriguing exploration, this time delving into the essence of water. Accompanied by his long-standing comrades, David Bowden and Stephen Henderson, the album is a musical stream that flows through the rich landscapes of Scottish folklore and the sophisticated avenues of contemporary jazz, blending them seamlessly.

Jasper Høiby – 3Elements: Like Water

Building upon the momentum of his 2023 debut album ‘Earthness’ with 3Elements, Jasper Høiby, a luminary in contemporary jazz known for his daring creativity and pivotal role in the groundbreaking ensemble Phronesis, is set to release a new album titled ‘Like Water’ in May 2024. This upcoming album features a revamped lineup, with the prodigious talents of pianist Chaerin Im and drummer Jamie Peet, adding new dimensions to Høiby’s musical explorations.‘Like Water’ promises to continue the tradition of Høiby’s distinctive approach to jazz, characterised by a compelling, uncompromising, and robust sonic landscape. This sound, deeply rooted in the groove-centric ethos of Phronesis, is further enhanced by Høiby’s masterful and unmistakably charismatic bass playing. The album is expected to encapsulate the essence of Høiby’s artistic vision, where the piano trio format is a synergistic space where each component shines, guiding the music’s journey. Høiby describes this format as “a unifying space, acting like one living organism where the energy of three people come together as one.”
