A bold, rhythm-focused evolution of one of Europe’s most distinctive voices in improvised music, Imaginary Mountains embodies a rawer, more tactile sound, shaped in part by the Yamaha CP-70 electric grand piano, with a gritty and metallic sound, sitting somewhere between acoustic piano and Rhodes.

Imaginary Mountains is the bold new trio album by Finnish pianist and composer Aki Rissanen.

While the trio’s trademark intuition remains, Rissanen’s compositional voice has evolved – leaner, more visceral, yet no less precise. Inspired by internal landscapes, visual art, and geopolitical unease, the record plays with contrasts. Imaginary Mountains is both a subtle nod to Jarrett’s Personal Mountains and a standalone statement—a mature, rhythm-forward work that invites you into terrain that’s not always comfortable, but always deeply felt.
