About

Flight is without doubt Dave Stapleton’s finest record to date. Many artists have their ambitions but rarely are these fulfilled with such artistry and beauty. Flight marks Stapleton’s seventh release and he has chosen to use the opportunity to produce a record that reaches far beyond easy categorisation. Flight is much, much more than just jazz with strings. It is a work that combines its different elements both seamlessly and gracefully. The jazz quartet here features saxophonist Marius Neset and bassist Dave Kane, both Edition recording artists in their own right, and the remarkable talents of drummer Olavi Louhivuori. This is a new group brought together for this album. Yet these musicians sound like they’ve worked together for years, such is the empathy and sensitivity of their playing.

PRESS

‘Another leap forward for a fast-developing European jazz original’. GUARDIAN ****

‘One of Britain’s most interesting jazz pianists and composers’. TELEGRAPH

‘His most ambitious and impressive work yet. But the real strength of this suite–like set is Stapleton’s melodic writing, whose contemplative tone often recalls the spirit of ECM’. TIMES

‘There are many brilliant young pianists, composers, arrangers and band leaders out there. However, it is very rare that we get everything in one package as we in Dave Stapletons Flight. Had he been American, he would be a super star in the jazz family already. World class music played by world class musicians’. SIDE 2 (Norway)

‘Jazz projects with strings can be dull and worthy, but pianist Stapleton’s writing for both the Brodowski String Quartet and his own jazz quartet, who together form the ensemble for this recording, satisfies on every level’. INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY *****

‘One of the best conceived and executed albums by a young British Jazz musician for some while’. JAZZWISE ****

‘A beacon of talent’. TIMES

‘Dave Stapleton is a man of considerable creative drive and ability. Having founded Edition Records in 2008 and quickly established it as one of jazz’s major new labels, he’s now produced one of its most significant releases so far’. SUNDAY HERALD

‘If this album wasn’t released on Stapleton’s own label, you would presume it’s an ECM record, with its dextrous blend of contemporary jazz and classical. Beauty and majesty in hi-definition’. BUZZ MAGAZINE
