Artist Takeover with London based Guitarist Rob Luft
In September I launched my first album as a leader, Riser, at King’s Place in London. Much to my disbelief, the gig was a sell out, and the album has been incredibly well-received across the board, with British, wider European press and even American critics all lauding it as one of the finest debuts to have been released on British soil in recent times. As a result, I now have an extensive UK tour lined up for 2018, as well as several shows on the continent too. I’m delighted to add that the album has been licensed to the Japanese Label P-Vine Records, and I’m so excited to get hold of a Japanese edition of Riser! I’m now hoping to make it over there next year to promote this Japanese release.
I’ve also just been on a tour of Scandinavia with renowned English pianist Django Bates, where we played a string of incredibly enjoyable concerts, radio broadcasts and festivals in Sweden and Finland. Django recently arranged Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band for jazz orchestra and extended rhythm section. An album of these arrangements was released in July on Edition, called Saluting Sgt Pepper, which I’d thoroughly recommend getting hold of, as it’s full of brilliant re-imaginations of the original songs, packed full of West African guitar influences, which I had such fun playing last month in Scandinavia. It was an honestly an absolute treat for me to be a part of the project, as I’m a huge fan of both The Beatles and Django!

I returned from touring to play a run of gigs in the London Jazz Festival. As well as recording a live concert for BBC Radio 3 Jazz Line-Up in The Clore Ballroom in The Southbank Centre, my band gave a sold-out performance at The Omnibus Arts Centre in Clapham, which was fantastic. It’s always such a pleasure to play gigs in your home town, and the festival environment simply heightens the wonderfully vibrant atmosphere of the London jazz scene. I was also awarded a place on the prestigious Take 5 young artist development scheme that will be run by Serious in February 2018.
Next year is shaping up to be even more exciting than the dizzying musical heights of 2017, commencing with a week of gigs in Copenhagen with the great Danish drummer Peter Bruun and bassist Jonas Westergaard, as well as a 15 date UK tour with my quintet starting on February 27th at The Mad Hatter in Oxford!
